2026 Oct 9-10, Bibical History Tour LaGrange, GA with Backroads Tours LLC

We woke up at 4 A.M., showered, finished packing, and hit the road by 4:30 A.M.

We stopped atHardie'ss in Scottsboro for breakfast, where I ordered a sausage, cheese, and egg biscuit and a Diet Coke.

We continued to Patches in Scottsboro, where we parked. Loaded onto bus 1023, driven by Barbara Dudley, and began our journey to LaGrange, GA.

Our itinerary changed because Hurricane ISAISA, a Category 3 storm, impacted the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

We made our first stop at Loves.

My great-grandkids called and sang me happy birthday. Hayne and Hazel went with their grandad and dad to Dolly's Travel Tennessean off I-65 North. My other great-grandson Atlas was at Disney World, and he called and sang Happy Birthday to me.

We arrived at 11:22 A.M. and stayed until 4:30 P.M.

After the long ride, everyone used the restroom, then gathered in a room with a replica of the first tabernacle the Israelites took with them throughout their wilderness wanderings. They also had a map of first-century Jerusalem. After a brief introduction, our guide took us outside, where she talked about

the lambs and goats, the threshing of the wheat at the Threshing floor. She talked about the blood of the grapes and olives at the grape press.

https://biblehub.com/topical/t/threshing.htm

We saw the Catacombs of the early church, the watchtower, the Agricultural Terrace, the well, the Sheepfold (temporary and permanent), and the New Testament Tomb.

We ate lunch just as the early Christians ate at the Lord's Last Supper. We sat at a Roman triclinium-style table. A triclinium is a formal dining room in a Roman building. The word comes from the Greeks: a sort of couch or chaise lounge.

We were served olives, grilled chicken, hummus, lentil soup, bread, grape juice, and water. We used our bread as spoons.

Our guide told us the story of the 12 apostles at the Lord's Last Supper.

We were guided through the Artifacts Gallery.

We gathered outside for a Shepherd's Bread Experience. Everyone patted out their dough and placed it on a pan over an open fire. The bread was served with honey and Butter.

We used the restrooms, visited the gift shop, then loaded onto the bus and headed to the Marriott by Hilton, room 415.

Saturday, October 10:

We ate breakfast at the hotel; it was buffet-style. I got eggs, biscuits, jelly, and apple juice. We sat with a couple and talked for several minutes.

We loaded onto the bus at 8:30 A.M. and began our journey home. We wanted to get home before the weather got bad. We didn't encounter any bad weather, but it did rain.

We stopped at Love's in Waco, GA, where we bought a 6-inch Philly Sub and three cookies, which Hubby and I split. We also bought a Mountain Dew and Diet Coke.

We played Bingo and watched TV on our way back to Scottsboro.

We loaded our luggage into the car and began our two-hour drive home. We arrived around 2 P.M. So glad we didn't get any bad effects from the hurricane.

Robert Lee Burnside and Junior Kimbrough Miss US 78 Blues Trail South Haven, MS

Hill Country Blues, Holly Springs
Although Delta blues often claim the spotlight, other blues styles were produced in different regions of Mississippi. In the greater Holly Springs area, musicians developed a "hill country" blues style characterized by few chord changes, unconventional song structures, and an emphasis on the "groove" or a steady, driving rhythm. In the 1990s, this style was popularized through the recordings of local musicians R. L. Burnside and David "Junior" Kimbrough.

R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough became unlikely heroes of the music world in the 1990s when their "hill country" style caught on in both blues and alternative rock music circles. Although Burnside (1926-2005) and Kimbrough (1930-1998) had both begun recording in the 1960s, they mainly had performed at local juke joints or house parties. Most of their early recordings had been made by field researchers and musicologists such as George Mitchell, David Evans of the University of Memphis, and Sylvester Oliver of Rust College. They developed a new, younger following after appearing in the 1991 documentary Deep Blues and recording for the Oxford-based Fat Possum label. College students, foreign tourists, and locals mixed at Kimbrough's legendary juke joint in Chulahoma. Both artists toured widely and inspired musicians from Kansas to Norway to emulate their hill country sounds. Their songs were recorded by artists including the Black Keys and the North Mississippi Allstars, and their tracks were remixed for films, commercials, and the HBO series The Sopranos. The music of actor Samuel L. Jackson's blues-singing character in the 2006 movie Black Snake Moan was primarily inspired by Burnside.

Burnside, born in Lafayette County, was influenced by blues stars John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters but also learned directly from local guitarists Mississippi Fred McDowell and Ranie Burnette. For most of his life, Burnside worked as a farmer and fisherman. He only began to perform at festivals and in Europe in the 1970s. Burnside's music took a more modern turn when his sons Joseph, Daniel, and Duwayne Burnside and son-in-law Calvin Jackson played with him in his Sound Machine band. By the early '90s, Burnside was performing around the world in a trio with grandson Cedric Burnside and "adopted son" Kenny Brown. Following Burnside's death, his family, including his grandson, Kent Burnside, continued to perform his music, as did his protege, Robert Belfour, a Holly Springs native who also recorded for the Fat Possum label.

Just as Burnside's music reflected his jovial personality, the more introspective Junior Kimbrough produced singular music with a darker approach. Born into a musical family in Hudsonville, Kimbrough formed his first band in the late 1950s and recorded a single for the Philwood label in Memphis in 1968. In the 1980s, his band, the Soul Blues Boys, featured longtime bassist Little Joe Ayers. In later years, he was backed by his son, Kinney, on drums, and by R.L. Burnside's son on guitar and bass. Kimbrough's multi-instrumentalist son, David Malone, devoted himself to carrying on his father's legacy and developing his own style on recordings for Fat Possum and other labels.

Junior Kimbrough (above)hosted house parties for years and ran his own Juke joint on Highway 4 in the 1990s. RRL Burnside once lived in the house next door.
High Water Records at the University of Memphis released 45s in the 1980s by Ranie Burnett (right), RRLBurnside, Junior Kimbrough, Jessie Mae Hemphill, and other Mississippi blues artists.
A special 2007 issue of Living Blues magazine featured the "next generation" of hill country blues, including descendants of R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Otha Turner.

Relatively few hill country blues artists had recorded before the Burnside-Kimbrough era. The most prolific was Mississippi Fred McDowell (1904-1972), who became popular on the "blues revival" circuit in the 1960s. The Afro-American drum tradition was also documented in Tate and Panola Counties, led by did Hemphill, Napoleon Strickland, and Othar Turner. Hemphill's granddaughter guitarist Jessie Mae Hemphill (1923-2006) was the bill country's most prominent female blues artist.

PRIDE AND DESTRUCTION

Psalm 7:14-16

14
Whoever is pregnant with evil

Conceives trouble and gives birth to disillusionment.
15

Falls into the pit they have made.
16
The trouble they cause recoils on them.

Their violence comes down on their own heads.

Pride goes before destruction,
A haughty spirit before a fall.

    But with humility comes wisdom.

Numbers 32:23

But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord, and you may be sure that sin will find you out.

Galatians 6:7

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

🙏🙏🙏🙏The Lord is My Shepherd

The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Amen.
