2023 Dec 13, McWane Science Center Museum Birmingham, Toyota Field Dancing Lights

 Today we ate breakfast at Jacks in Cullman. I ordered gravy with sausage and biscuits. Ave ordered sausage and biscuits. Hubby ordered a ham and cheese sandwich.

We traveled to Birmingham stopping at the McWane Science Museum Center. Hubby went to level 3 to see the train display. 

Ava and I went to the second floor to see the dinosaurs, where we saw Super Cell Tank and birds in a tree, Ava was a weather girl, and she rode the Sky High Cycle.

We walked up to the third floor and Ave rode the train and the Zipline several times.

In the basement was the World of Water Aquarium where Ave petted a shark and ray. 

We saw coral, a variety of fish, and eel.

On the first floor, Ave made large bubbles and experimented with several science objects.  Ava lay on a bed of nails. We went inside the distortion room, on the top corner you were small, and on the bottom corner, you were large.

 We stopped for dinner at Oh! Bryans in Hartselle. Hubby ordered steak, baked potato, and salad bar. I ordered a chicken wrap. Ave ordered chicken nuggets, and fries from McDonalds.

After dinner, we rode to Toyota Field in Huntsville to see the dancing lights. 

Winter Wonder Land was not open but we did get to see the light show. 

Traffic was horrible in Huntsville. 

It was way after dark when we arrived home. 

Ava spent the night. 

2023 Dec 9, Dickens of Christmas Yall Come!

Making Smores

 We walked downtown Tuscumbia stopping to make smores while we were eating William and his girlfriend came by.

Took pictures of the carriages being pulled by Clyde’s Horses. We saw several characters from Dickens Christmas Carrol, and Santa Clause. We stopped to pet the Lama, sheep, Zebra, goats, and Camel.

We also went to the Tennessee Valley Art Museum Christmas Mart. Lots of beautiful handmade items for sale. Hubby sat in the car while I toured Ivy Green.

I was told the history of Helen Keller and her home Ivy Green.  We also bought some candy(5 packages receep cups) and an upside umbrella for it was raining and we didn't want to get wet.

We finished the day with lunch at Whataburgers. A hamburger with fries and soda.

2023 August 27-31, Trip to Hollister, Point Lookout, Ridgedale, Branson, MO., Searcy, Arkansas, Dyersburg, TN (5 Days)

 Sunday, August 27, Day 1: 

Today we left the house around 6:30 arrived at the Robertsons loaded their luggage into our car and began our journey to Branson.

Our first stop was for breakfast at Jack in Tuscumbia, Al.

I ordered gravy with sausage biscuits and a soda. 

After we finished breakfast we began our journey west on Highway 72 toward Iuka, MS.

We traveled through several small towns entering the interstate in Memphis. 

We crossed the Mississippi River into West Memphis, Arkansas stopping at the Welcome Center.

Our next stop was to meet friends at Western Sizzlin Searcy, Arkansas.

There we enjoyed a lovely lunch while enjoying the company of old friends and making new friends.

After lunch, we headed north toward Missouri stopping at South Mountain Scenic Overlook where you can see Bryan Mountain Elevation 1760, McCutcheon Gap Snowball, Bear Creek, Searcy County Airport, Point Peter Elevation 2040, Round Mts., Buffalo National River, Boat Mountain Elevation 2221 Marshall, St Joe and Harrison, Arkansas. 

It's a great place to stop and take pictures. 

We arrived at Paradise Point Resort in Hollister, Mo checked into room 9404, and took the elevator up to our room. We had three bedrooms, a kitchen, three bathrooms, a living room, and a pool room with a view of the White River. 

We unpacked and headed outside where we walked alongside the swimming pool, hot tub, and floating pool. 

We were all too full to eat dinner so we just snacked.

Monday, August 28, Day 2: 

We ate breakfast at the Hungry Hunter Restaurant where they serve you very large portions of food. 

The pancakes would cover a very large plate. The bread from which they made French toast was homemade and served with two very large slices of bread. 

Eggs, Ham, and hash rounds were also served. Great place for a hungry man. I could not eat all of my French toast. 

In Ridgeland Missouri, we took a golf cart that holds four down into the canyon, which is a 2 1/2 miles long tour cave and the waterfalls. There were several places where we would park the golf cart and look around. 

Inside the cave was a snack bar where you could get snacks and a drink. 

After we finished the tour we took the shuttle to the Top of the Rock where we toured the  Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum which was filled with artifacts back to the Woolly Mammoth. 

After the museum tour, we were told to come back around 7:30-8PM for the sunset, playing of bagpipes and cannon firing. 

We rode to the historic part of Branson stopping at B’s Ice Cream Parlor for a strawberry cheesecake waffle Cone. We rode to Bass Pro Shop and then took a short trolley ride around the historic part of Branson.  

We walked along the River Landing where we saw several new restaurants, fountains, and pipes that shot out fire. 

We ate lunch at World Famous White River Fish House where I ordered 3 shrimp tacos. I could not eat all of them so I just ate the shrimp.
We shopped at Elks but didn’t buy anything. 

We rode back to Top of the Rock to see the sunset, tour the old church, and watch the canon being fired.

We came back to the condo showered and went to bed.

Tuesday, August 29, Day 3: 

We ate a cinnamon roll for breakfast. 

We rode to College of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, MO.  where we toured the War Memorial at the Keeter Center. 

We ate lunch at Dobyn’s Dining Room at the Keeter Center. I ordered steak soup with rolled and butter. 

We toured the East End Mill where I bought a handcrafted basket. 

Next, we toured the Ralph Foster Museum which housed three levels of artifacts. 

Which included musical talents from Missouri, musical instruments, Quilts, dishes, dolls, circus, cars, and animals (taxidermy) such as Polar bears, Grizzly Bears, Lions, tigers, buffalo, elk, deer, etc. 

It included butterflies, and birds of every kind, and just so much information in this one building. 

At 7:30 we were boarding the Branson Belle for a dinner cruise and show.

The show was great it started a little slow but finished with a bang.

It was another long day so off to bed we go.

Wednesday, August 30, Day 4

I ate a bowl of instant oatmeal for breakfast and off we went.

Today we are going to Silver Dollar City Branson, MO. for a fun-filled day of shows.

We will also enjoy a train ride into the woods only to be stopped by train robbers.

Then we will enjoy a hamburger and onion rings at the Lumber Camp Restaurant.

Today was the hottest day yet and after all that walking we were ready to leave the park.

On our way back to the condo we stopped at Little Hacienda in Branson, Mo where I enjoyed a Margarita on the rocks. I also ordered Churro with Ice Cream. 

Hubby ordered a burrito supreme. 

We were all very full when we left the restaurant.

I took a shower and went straight to bed and did not wake up until 2AM. Everyone was asleep so I took out my journal and wrote for about an hour and a half then went back to bed.

Thursday, August 31, Day 5

The last day of the month and our last day in Branson, MO.

Packed our bags, loaded the car, and were on our way around 6:30-7AM.

We stopped to fill up with gas in Black Rock, Arkansas. 

We didn’t stop for lunch until we reached Dyersburg, Tennessee

We stopped at The Bus Stop Restaurant where I enjoyed a half turkey sandwich with pasta which was very good. We sat outside for it was a very nice excellent day.

We dropped our friends off and stopped at the car wash to wash off all the bugs that we had accumulated on the highway.

We were home by 5PM.

We had a great trip but glad to be home in my own bed.

Our next trip is a cruise unless we decide to take a day trip or maybe an overnight trip to the beach. 

2023 July 18-21, Trip to The Alpine Village of Helen, Georgia (4 days)

 Day 1: Tuesday, July 18:

We left home about 6 A.M. stopping at Jacks in Athens for biscuits and gravy. 

We continued through Huntsville, taking Hwy 72 toward Scottsboro through (hwy 35)Mento crossing the Tennessee River,  to (Hwy 40) Hangar, Valley Head, and Mento crossing into Georgia.

In Georgia, we traveled through Summerville, Rome onto the I-75 bypass of Atlanta. We went through Cartersville, Marietta taking 400 north bypassing Atlanta to Dahlonega, Cleveland, and 75 to Helen.

We checked into the Castle Inn around 2:25 p.m. and took all our luggage up two flights of stairs (they had no elevator.)

We walked down the front of the hotel to the nearby Troll Tavern. The Tavern was along the Chattahoochee  River with a gate covered in locks weighing it down. There was a sign that said no more locks and all locks had to be removed. It was causing the gate to be unstable and unsafe.

While we were waiting for a table we watched hundreds of people tubing down the Chattahoochee River on green, pink, and blue tubes.

We ordered Reuben on toast with mashed potatoes and Diet Coke. I think they were short-staffed because there were lots of empty tables and people waiting to be served.

We walked around the town and some of the places we saw were: The Wooden Toys, Assay Station, Welcome to Wildwood, Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen, Wilkommen, Helen Hat, Grimm's Weg, Sock Store, Christmas & More, Christoff's Seventy-six, Helendof Inn, Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf, Pepper Place, Dizzy Bear,  Cowboys and Angels, The Christmas Shop, just to name a few.

It was a beautiful day but very hot so we walked back to the Castle Inn and rested until around 7PM. 

We left the Castle Inn and walked across the bridge stopping for a picture at the Cafe International (head in the hole), the Mural of Helendof Inn. I continued walking passed the Alpine Wedding Chapel, Fashall where they were playing bingo. I saw the Pirates Cove Miniature Golf and Alpine Village Inn. 

I walked to Wendy's where I had left hubby and he bought us a strawberry frosty and Diet Coke. 

We walked back to our car and rode to Cleveland stopping at the White County Courthouse to take a few pictures. 

Day 2: Wednesday, July 19:

Early morning I took my journal outside onto the balcony and began to write. I watched as the town slowly came alive. I could hear the birds chirping in the distance and could feel the cool breeze and the sky was full of clouds. The only people that I saw were early-morning workers. 

We were at the Waffle House when it opened at 8AM. I ordered 3 pecan pancakes with whipped cream and Diet Pepsi. Hubby ordered 2 eggs, sausage, 3 pancakes with gravy, biscuits and hash browns.

We rode to the visitors center there they gave us a map of Helen and suggested places we should visit. 

She said Anna Ruby Falls, Sautee General Store, Hardman's Farm & Indian Mound, and the Covered Bridge. 

We walked through Veterans Park taking pictures the park was behind the Visitors Center. 

We rode to Unite State Park to see Anna Ruby Falls but before we began our climb uphill to the falls it began to sprinkle so hubby went back to the car for the umbrella. 

We had to stop several times to rest during our climb uphill. There were stone benches along the path. 

It was getting slippery with all the light rain but we finally made it. Hubby stopped just short of the falls Hubby talked to a couple while I walked to the top.

We also met a family with teenagers walking up the hill and they passed us coming down. Several people were visiting Anna Ruby Falls. 

Our next stop was Baby-land The Cabbage Patch Doll Hospital. Baby cabbage patches were planted all around the hospital. When you walked inside there were pictures of famous people on the walls. 

There were several different rooms of dolls and scenery it was overwhelming.

It was hard to choose which baby to adopt but I settled on Sandy Sue. 

Everyone crowded around to watch the birth & the storytelling of a baby boy Cabbage Patch Doll. 

Our next stop was the White County Courthouse Museum.

It had already closed the day before so we rode back today. 

Several ladies were sitting around a table talking they were members of the Historic Society of White County. 

One of them told us the history of the museum. 

We could hear music coming from upstairs. There was a man in the Old Courtroom playing a fiddle.

I saw a replica of the Covered Bridge and asked questions about it and its location.

Our next stop was the Hardman Farm State Park.  We had to park on the hill and walk down several flights of stairs to the Visitor Center so hubby did not want to walk around the farm.

He bought me a ticket and I walked around taking pictures of the building and historic markers.

I met a couple of women also taking pictures of markers to be read later. 

Hubby was in the car waiting for me at the bottom of the hill.

Next, we rode to Stovall Covered Bridge and Old Sautee General Store.

The Stovall Covered Bridge has been washed away three times. 

We stopped at Walgreens in Cleveland for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a couple of Heath Bars. 

We stopped at Nora Granary Mill where we bought some stone mill cornmeal. 

We ate dinner at Wendy's then back to Castle Inn. (Hamburger and fries)

We watched the new Ghost Buster Movie.

I walked outside to talk to my daughter and to write in my journal. 

It had been a full day. 

Day 3: Thursday, July 20:  

We rode to McDonalds in Cleveland bought a muffin with sausage and hubby ordered a big breakfast. 

Today we rode to North Georgia Wildlife and Safari Park in Cleveland, GA.  We walked through the petting zoo and then drove through the Safari where we saw buffalo, Elk, Deer, Emu, Ostrich, camels, Zebra, and several small animals. 

I was not too impressed.

Next, we rode to Brasstown Bald Hiawassee, GA (the highest point in Georgia) and paid $8 to ride the shuttle van up to the overlook and visitor center. 

It was too foggy to see very far but we did enjoy the Visitor Center museum.

In the museum, we saw several handmade quilts hanging on the walls.

We saw several different forest animals, a log with a saw, a train engine, displays, etc. 

Saw several barn Swallows and Gray Catbirds. 

We rode the shuttle bus back down the mountain. 

We stopped at Chick-fil-A in Cleveland for dinner. I ordered a kid's chicken finger meal with waffle fries and ice cream. 

It was raining when we returned to the Castle Inn. 

I sat outside on the balcony listening to the band in the restaurant across the street. 

It was a stormy night and very few people were outside. 

Day 4: Friday, July 21:
