2026 Oct 13, 14, Trip with Travel Lady to Dover, Land Between the Lakes, Reelfoot Land and Patti's Settlement

Day 1, Tuesday,  October  13, 2026 

 We started the day with a trip to Lawrenceburg and stopped at Hardie's for breakfast, where I ordered a sausage, egg, and biscuit. Hubby ordered a pork chop biscuit with gravy. $10.94

We met another couple from Columbia, TN, who were also going on the same trip. We got a text from our guide that our bus was having problems and had to be replaced, so they were running 30 minutes late. 

So we sat and talked to our new friends. 

We arrived at the church where we parked overnight for our trip and waited with others for the bus Starship Atlantis. 

Around 8:30, everyone boarded the bus, and we began our journey. We stopped in Waynesboro to pick up a couple.

Our first stop was the Patsy Cline and Chat Akins rest stop in Holladay, TN, around 10:30 A.M., to use the restrooms.

We arrived at the Visitor Center in Stewart County, Dover, TN, at 11:47 A.M., where we were welcomed with a buffet-style lunch that included BBQ, Turkey, green beans, creamed potatoes, and rolls, with iced tea or water. After we finished our meal, we walked through the museum, which had Civil War memorabilia from Dover. We saw quilts, photos, riverboats, and American Indian artifacts, and a full-size map of Dover from the winter of the Civil War. We saw a replica of Joe's Country Store, a replica of the Home of Thomas and Julia Cruthers, and a portrait of William Harrison Scarborough, a portraitist and miniaturist. 

Around 1 P.M.,  we rode through the Fort Donelson Battlefield National Park. Fort Donelson National Battlefield played a crucial role during the American Civil War because of its location on the Cumberland River. 

Around 1:45 P.M., we arrived at The Home Place 1850, a working farm with historic buildings, programs, and gift shops. I bought three postcards: National Recreation KY. TN, Golden Pond Visitor Center & Planetarium, and The Homeplace 1850s Living History Farm for $1 each; I also bought a bottle of Grape Prepel for $4.

Everyone walked through the gift shop, used the restrooms, and walked through the displays; then we gathered in the classroom and were divided into two groups.

Our group walked through the park, stopping to visit a couple of homes and see how people would have lived in the 1800s. 

We saw the American Guinea Hogs, Pinkey and Blake, basking in the sun. 

We saw the Dominickers' chickens and their rooster, Obadiah. I said Obadiah was from the Bible, and our guide said yes, but sometimes the kids think she says Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. Fun Fact.

Our last visit was to see Cinnamon, the therapy horse, and Todd the mule. Our guide ran to get a couple of apples to feed them.

Sarah, our guide, held up the two apples and called Cinnamon and Todd. They recognized her and came running for those apples, which they enjoyed. 

A couple of kids were nearby; one patted the horses, but the other was afraid. Our guide said they get visitors from all over the US and other countries. We thanked her, walked back to the building, used the restrooms, and boarded our bus. 

At 4:30, we rode through the Elk & Bison Prairie National Recreation Area, Caadiz, KY.  

We saw several male and female Elk and several bison crossing the road.

A herd of bison lay in the grass, resting near the water, while others stood in the middle of the road, blocking cars.

Our next stop was Patti's Settlement in the 1880s. We visited the gift shop and walked around outside, where we saw several great places to take photos. One was the water wheel at the Grist Mill, an enclosed area with umbrellas and the words Pattie's, the pumpkin display, and the GB Duck Toy Emporium; we saw a kids' play area, a bright yellow Crosley, and a Rooser rocker, Lots of birdhouses, a manager display, polar bear and pig displays. We saw a chapel, a life-size chess game, an old car, and Calvin's Swine Moonshine.

Around 6 P.M., we were taken to the dining room where we were served a choice of pork chops, chicken, or Salmon with the fixings. Before the food came out, they brought us strawberry, whipped butter, and bread shaped like a flower in a ceramic flower pot. 

We were served a variety of drinks, then a house salad. I chose Raspberry vinaigrette while Hubby chose Thousand Island dressing.

Hubby chose a thick, juicy 16 oz center-cut pork chop, charbroiled and seasoned with Patti's seasoning sauce, served with a large baked potato. 

I chose Salmon broiled over an open flame, served over a bed of rice pilaf with a large baked potato. Hubby and I only ate the meat because after the bread and salad, we could only eat the meat. 

Dessert choices were  Bill's boatsinker pie, a dark double-fudge brownie topped with coffee ice cream, piled high with whipped cream, covered with chocolate syrup, and topped with a cherry.

Sawdust Pie: coconut graham cracker crumb with pecans in an egg batter, baked in a flaky pie shell. Topped with a banana slice and whipped cream. We got ours to-go. 

In the gift shop, I bought minies of Horton Hears-a-Whoo elephant, the Grinch, Cindy-Hoo-Loo, and Max, the Grinch's dog. $43.63

Once everyone finished dinner, we headed to our hotel, Patti's Settlement Hotel. We were in room 202.

Day 2, Wednesday, October 14, 2026 

We had breakfast at the hotel around 7 A.M. I ate scrambled eggs, sausage with gravy, and apple juice.

We loaded our luggage onto the motor coach around 8 A.M. and began our day's adventures.

Our first stop was at the Reelfoot Lake Visitor Center around 9:30 A.M.

We had 30 minutes to use the restroom, visit the R.C. Donaldson Memorial Museum, and shop (which features a variety of displays bout the nature center )

Several of us walked outside to see the rescued bald eagle and red-tailed hawks, then walked down the boardwalk to the lake, where we saw cypress trees, turtles, and great blue herons. 

At 10 A.M., we all gathered in the interpretive room where Ranger Madlyn Cox and Ranger Joah Winford gave a demonstration with the Barred owl, the Mini Screech owl, and the American kestrel.

We ate a family-style lunch across the street at Boyette's, which included fried fish, white beans, coleslaw, hush puppies, French fries, onion rings, Iced tea, and a variety of pies for dessert. The food was great.

When we finished eating, we walked back across the street and boarded the bus with our guides, Coy Hussey and Shane Morrow, who filled our heads with information about the park. 

We rode several miles throughout the park, where we saw one of their bald eagles in the middle of the road eating roadkill from a raccoon. We saw egrets, Great Blue Herons, and White Pelicans. We stopped for a group photo in front of a large, croppie. (fish) 

We thanked our guides and dropped them off around 2:45 P.M. at the Visitor Center. 

Then we began our journey home, but first stopped at our golden nugget, Rusty's TV and Movie Museum of Cars, which took about 30 minutes. 

Back on the road, we stopped at Love's and bought a bag of Cheetos, nuts, a cheese stick, and a couple of drinks. 

Our next stop was to drop off a couple in Waynesboro, then head to Lawrenceburg, where most people got off. We got off here. Then the bus took the remaining passengers to Florence. 

We stopped at Krystal to use the restroom and purchase three double Krystals, which we ate on the way home. $13.86

We arrived home late. Another great trip in the books.

2026 Aug 7, Visiting Maury County and First Friday with Travel Lady Lawrenceburg.

 We stopped at Hardie's in Loretto for breakfast, where I ordered a sausage, cheese, and biscuit. Hubby ordered a ham and biscuit. We traveled to Loretto Faith Baptist Church, where we parked along with several others and waited for our bus. We loaded onto the Elixir Starship bus with driver Steve Carter. Steve had picked up a group in Florence, and now we were headed to pick up a group at First Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg. We were on our way by 8 A.M., stopping in Mt. Pleasant to pick up four more people. 

Our first stop was St. John's Church (Episcopal Church Ashwood) in Mt. Pleasant. Leonidas Polk built it in the early 1800s. Our guide greeted us and invited us inside, where we learned about its history. Built around 1841, now used only for special occasions, burials, and Whitsunday. 

He also told us that the church was broken into and sustained significant damage, and that they now have a security system to alert them to vandals. 

We walked outside to visit the cemetery, where several members of the Polk family are buried, among others. This tombstone was interesting: Trezevant (Ted) Yeatman III. Born Dec 16, 1951, died Nov 1, 2009. He was a historian and biographer of Frank and Jesse James. (a bank robber).

We thanked our guide and rode to our next stop, Rattle and Snap Mansion Museum. Rattle and Snap was built for George Washington Polk, a son of William Polk. His brother, Lucius Junius Polk, built Hamilton Place; he married Rachel Donaldson Jackson, the grandniece of President Andrew Jackson. 

Col. WM. Polk built Ashwood Hall for Leonidas Polk; both houses burned down. The Polk family built St. John's Church, which we visited.

The William Polk family built the home on land they won from the governor of North Carolina in a game of "Rattle and Snap." The game of chance was said to be played with beans. 

The home is now a private residence bought by a couple from California, one of whom is a retired eye doctor. We were split into two groups to tour the residence's lower level. (The couple lives in the back part of the house. The house is full of the Polk family's furniture and household items from the period, bought at auctions and estate sales. The couple bought the house in the early 2000's and did extensive restoration, which took several years.

Our next stop was Mt Pleasant Grille, where we were served a buffet-style meal. I ate green beans, creamed potatoes, a hamburger with gravy, onions, and Mushrooms, a salad, and, for dessert, a slice of cheesecake of our choice. After our meal, some of us visited the Museum next door. Several of us walked around the town visiting different shops. Our next stop was Rippivella in Spring Hill, TN.

No photos were allowed inside; I'm not sure why, since there wasn't much to see.

Our guide was very informative about the home and its involvement with the Civil War. At different times throughout the year, they hold a Civil War reenactment. After visiting the gift shop, we headed to our next stop.

We stopped at the Visitor Center in Columbia for a restroom break and information. Outside were a couple of historic markers and statues of James K. Polk and his wife, Sarah Childress Polk.

Next, we walked across the street to the Polk Museum for a guided tour.

First, we watched a film about President James K. Polk and his family. After the guided tour, we were free to visit the kitchen, the slave quarters, and the outdoor gardens.

When we finished, we walked a couple of blocks to Courthouse Square to attend First Friday in Columbia.

We stopped for a brownie Sundae at Hattie Jones Creamery. We ate a slice of pizza from a food truck. We stopped in the Tennessee Distillery to use the restrooms, look around, and rest. We heard thunder, and it started to lightning, so we headed to the bus. A few people were still not on the bus; they were either shopping or eating. As it began to rain, the last passenger made it to the bus just before the bottom fell out. It began to storm as we set out on our journey back to Lawrenceburg.

We dropped the first group at First Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg. Then we continued to Faith Baptist Church in Loretto, where we were let off.

The bus continued to Florence to drop off the last passengers.

We were both very tired when we arrived home. We went to bed early; it had been a long day.

2026, July 19, Day Trip on the Hiwassee Train Delano, TN with Backroads Tours LLC

 We rode to Athens, stopping at Cracker Barrel for breakfast. I ordered two biscuits with sausage and fried apples. Hubby ordered pancakes and fried eggs. We both ordered iced tea. 

I gave Hubby one of my biscuits and a piece of sausage.

We rode to Gabe's in Scottsboro, and everyone had boarded except 5 more people and us.

We left Scottsboro around 10 A.M.  on bus 3006 with driver Kathy.

Our first rest stop was at Pilot in Cleveland, TN. Our bus air conditioner wasn't working, so when we got to Delano, TN, the driver dropped us off and called the bus company, which sent another bus, 3006.

We boarded the Hiwassee Train and were given green wristbands, a train ticket, and a snack box. 

The snack box contained candy, nuts, Little Debbie, hand wipes, and water. 

Our guide had purchased Premium seating for cars 4 & 5. It included a boxed lunch: ham on a croissant, lettuce, tomato, pickle, a chocolate chip cookie, and a bag of chips. We also had a cooler full of different sodas.

After the train began, a young conductor came calling, "Tickets, please," and punched them.

We started our journey by eating lunch as we traveled a scenic 50-mile round trip on the Hiwassee River Gorge Railroad. 

Outside our windows, we could see people tubing, canoeing, and kayaking as we traveled through the forest up the mountain slopes. We crossed the famous Hiwassee Loop at Delano and Forner. We stopped at the top and began our trip back.

We rode past the TVA Apalachi Powerhouse, which comprises two generators and generated 103.8 GWh during Sep-Dec. It is located in Polk County, TN. During the day, people can enjoy fishing, tubing, kayaking, and canoeing, but at night, the generators are turned off, so the river becomes a creek.

Everyone swapped sides so the people on the right could sit on the left to see the Hiwassee River.

I walked through the train, stopping to visit other passengers. The trip took 4 1/2 hours. We loaded onto our new bus and began our journey to Scottsboro.

On our way home, we stopped at Krystal in Scottsboro, where I ordered 3 double Krystals, fries, and Cokes.

We arrived home around 10 P.M. Another wonderful trip with friends.

2026 May 21, Day Trip to McMinnville, Rock Island and Monteagle, TN (with Backroads Tours LLC)

We were up at 3:30 A.M. and left the house at 4:30 A.M.

We stopped at Jack's in Athens for a single gravy, biscuits, and a Diet Coke. 

My biscuit wasn't done, so I went back, and they gave me a cooked one.

But it still gave me gas, and I burped all the way to Tennessee.

Our first stop was the welcome center at Rock Island State Park. The park ranger told us about the park and offered a guided tour. So we got back on the bus and followed the ranger. 

We stopped at the Beach Area, and everyone got out and walked around. 

Our next stop was the short waterfall and the old abandoned cotton mill. 

The ranger turned on his flashing lights and removed the roped-off area so we could park on the grass. 

Everyone got out to take pictures of the waterfalls and the surrounding area. We thanked the park ranger and began our journey to Falcon Rest, about an hour away, for lunch and a murder mystery show.

We arrived at the visitor center and were greeted by our guide and owner.

We were led into the mansion, listened to the guide, and were each given a role in the murder mystery while we enjoyed lunch.

Hubby played George Beech (the town drunk), and I played his wife, Marie Beech.

For lunch, we were served Strawberry Pretzel salad, Baked Chicken, Potatoes, green beans, a roll, and Chocolate cake topped with a cherry and a dab of whipped cream.

After lunch and a show, we were given a guided tour of the mansion. No photos were allowed inside.

We took a group photo on the mansion's front porch.

We shopped at the gift shop, thanked our guide, and headed to our next stop.

History of Rock Island 

Rock Island State Park is a state park in Warren and White Counties, Tennessee, in the Southeastern United States. The park is named after the community of Rock Island, Tennessee, which in turn was named for an island on the Caney Fork, upstream from the confluence of the Collins River and the Great Falls Dam. Rock Island State Park centers on a peninsula formed by the confluence of these two rivers and extends downstream to the headwaters of Center Hill Lake.

We stopped at Mountain Goat Restaurant and gift shop, located in Monteagle, TN, where Hubby and I enjoyed a slice of Chocolate Cheesecake topped with pecans and drizzled with chocolate and caramel, a Diet Coke, and a coconut chocolate bar. 

Took a few photos, then loaded onto the bus and headed to Scottsboro.

We arrived a little before 6 P.M., with a two-hour ride home. 

We didn't stop until we got home a little after 8 P.M.

2026 April 28-30 Mystery Trip with Travel Lady (Greenville, Kingsport, Bristol, Tusculum, & Gull's Gap, Tennessee)

 April 28-30 Mystery Trip with Travel Lady

Day 1: Tuesday, April 28, travel Day to Mystery location

Hubby and I drove to Lawrenceburg and parked in the church lot.

We were on the bus by 6:45 A.M.(Bus driver Steve) (Bus Starship Dream Line Journey, Excelsior.)(Group leader Krystal)

After everyone was loaded onto the bus & we were on the road, our leader passed out a breakfast tray that included two chicken minis, a fruit cup with strawberries, blueberries,  & grapes, two sweet pretzels, cheddar cheese chunks, and a muffin from Sister Sweets. 

Our first stop was at a pilot in Columbia, TN, to use the restroom.

We stopped for lunch at Wendy's, @ Wendy' s1618 S Roanne ST, Harriman, TN 

Hubby and I both ordered a junior cheeseburger deluxe, large fries, and two Frostys.

We arrived at Burlay Bunny Antiques Home Decor and More in Greeneville. Here we met our guide, Vera Ann Myers, and the owner and employee, who were waiting to greet us. A table full of treats, cookies, dip, crackers, fruit punch, and more was waiting for us. Everyone used the restrooms and enjoyed the snacks. When we returned to the bus, everyone was given a surprise gift. 

We returned to the bus and rode to the General Morgan Inn, 111 N Main St, Greeneville, TN, room 213, where we spent two nights.

 

After the bus unloaded and our luggage was taken to our rooms, we had some free time.

Hubby and I walked through downtown, where we saw several churches, the courthouse, historic markers, and much more. 

We returned to the hotel for dinner in the Grand Ballroom at 5:30 P.M.

We were served a salad, rolls, butter, green beans, baked chicken, creamed potatoes, and banana pudding for dessert. 

At 7:30 P.M., we walked to the Capitol Theatre, where the Friends of Crockett greeted us before we watched the Disney movie, David Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier.

After the movie, everyone walked back to the hotel.

Day 2: Wednesday, April 29:

We were served a buffet breakfast in the Grand Ballroom. 

I got bacon, fruit, scrambled eggs, biscuits, jelly, and cranberry juice.

Everyone went to Catalyst Coffee Co. for coffee, a pastry, or a muffin. Hubby and I both ordered a raspberry chocolate scone, which was included with our hotel stay. 

After breakfast, everyone walked to the Dickson-Williams Mansion behind the hotel. 

We received a brief history of the mansion and toured it. 

We then boarded the bus for our next mystery location: the Kingsport Carousel, Kingsport, TN.

It is located inside the Pal's Roundhouse on East Center St and Clinchfield.

The 30 hand-carved and hand-painted animals, including dogs, cats, dragons, tigers, zebras, and horses, were made by volunteers and can be enjoyed for just one dollar. For children and children at heart. 

Everyone enjoyed riding the carousel at least two times. 

Our next stop was Riverfront Seafood Company, where we enjoyed lunch. 

I ordered a baked potato and fried codfish. Hubby ordered fried shrimp and a 

baked potato. 

After lunch, we rode to the birth home of Tennessee Ernie Ford in Bristol, TN. The curator was very informative. 

Our next stop was Bristol, where one side of the town was in Tennessee and the other in Virginia. 

We did a little shopping at Cranberry Lane, on the Virginia side. Here I bought a mixed package of raspberry and chocolate Scones and a mat. Spent $19.95.

Our next stop was Bristol Motor Speedway. We were led to the Dome seating, where we had a great view of the speedway. Our guide gave us the speedway's history, and everyone had the chance to use the restrooms.

Next, we loaded back onto the bus and headed to the Motor Speedway, where we drove around the track. What fun!

We stopped at the gift shop, where I bought a speedway bag.

We loaded onto the bus again and rode to the state park where David Crockett was born. All the buildings, including David's birth home, were washed away by a flood just a few years ago. 

Only the chimney remained standing. The park intends to rebuild because of the site's importance.

Our last stop was Whistle Stop Restaurant in Tusculum, TN, for dinner. 

Here we were served broccoli soup, a salad, rolls, dip and crackers, baked salmon, a baked potato, tea, and cheesecake.

We returned to the hotel and packed because we are leaving tomorrow.

Day 3: Thursday, April 30, Travel Home with surprise stops

Walked to Catalyst Coffee Co for another raspberry and chocolate scone. 

Buffet breakfast at the hotel ballroom. I got gravy biscuits, eggs, sausage, and fruit. 

After breakfast, I walked a couple of blocks in the town before we began our journey home. 

Our first stop was the Maifield lilac farm at 9:18 A.M. in Bull Gap, TN. They served fresh lemonade to everyone. Some walked to the lilac fields and others to the greenhouse. I bought a small lilac plant, some body butter, and local honey. 

Our next stop was Myers Farm in Gulls Gap, TN. We all went to the greenhouses for veggies and flowers. I purchased a sweet potato vine, some herbs, basil, thyme, and a Mosquito plant. 

For lunch, we were served ham, turkey, chips, tomatoes, lettuce, iced tea, and dessert. I got coconut pie.

We loaded onto the bus and began our final journey home. I fell asleep for about 1 1/2 hours and missed our first rest stop. I slept right through it. 

Our final stop was at Loves in Columbia, TN, where I bought two double cheeseburgers and fries at Wendy's, which we ate on the bus.

We arrived in Lawrenceburg around 6 P.M. Everything was unloaded for the people getting off here. 

The next stops were Loretto and Florence. We got off at Lawrenceburg and were home by 6:30 P.M.
