2023 July 21-23, Trip to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, TN (3 Days)

Day 1: Friday, July 21: 

Today we left Helen, Georgia, early morning, about 6AM. We took the back roads and by 6:51 we were in Clayton, North Carolina. 

By 8:12AM we were in Cherokee, North Carolina.

 We stopped here to take pictures of the bear statues before heading across the mountain. We stopped along with several others to see a herd of elk gracing.

We crossed the mountain and stopped several times to take pictures of the smokey clouds lying on them. We stopped for breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Pigeon Forge. 

We went shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall. Bought two bras and two panties at Victoria's Secret and one bra at Pink. We stopped at several other stores: Disney, Nike, Under Armer, just to name a few.

We feed the Ducks, Geese, and Pigeons at the Old Mill along the Little Pigeon River 

We rode to the Old Mill Farm-House where I bought my son several different herbs packages, a bag of stone ground yellow cornmeal, and olive oil.

We ate Taco Bell for lunch.

We checked into Apple Valley Inn a little after 4 PM unloaded the car and filled the fridge with our snacks. 

Spent the rest of the day watching TV and resting. 

Day 2:  Saturday, July 22: 

We ate breakfast at McDonald's I ordered Muffins and sausage. 

We rode to Pigeon Forge's Visitor Center and bought all-day tickets to ride the trolley. 

We bought fuel at Murphy's and bought a few groceries at Walmart (bagels, cream cheese, drinks, fruit)

Took our food back to the hotel. 

We rode to Parrot Mountain and were there when they opened at 10AM.

Had my picture taken with five birds, two on my arms two on my shoulders, and one on my head.

We visited the parrot nursery where we could actually pick up the birds. 

We also went into the feeding area with Nectar several small birds flew down and drank every drop of the nectar from my hand.

Around 11:30 AM we rode to the Trolley from  Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg. 

We took the trolley from the Visitor Center in Gatlinburg to the downtown area. 

We were the last two to board the fully loaded trolley which was standing room only.

A nice young man gave me his seat and hubby had to ride standing up.

It took over an hour to go a short distance because of the traffic. When we were almost there everyone got off except a couple and us. 

Everyone had to get off the trolley when we arrived at the Center near the Aquarium and wait for another trolley to take us into the downtown area. 

The traffic was terrible and we had already waited over 30 minutes for the next trolley.

Where we were going was several blocks away so we decided to walk. 

 We took the scenic route along the Pigeon River which was not crowded and there was a nice cool breeze.

We were headed to Bubba Gumps for a late lunch. 

We ordered a seafood platter of shrimp, fish, hush puppies, and fries. 

When we finished we walked down the crowded sidewalks and it began to rain so we looked for shelter. 

It did not rain long so we walked further down the sidewalks. 

We walked back to the Trolley Stop and waited for the trolley to take us to Gatlinburg Visitor Center. 

The crowd had thinned out so the trolley was not crowded going back. 

At the cross, there was an accident involving four vehicles. Our turn was blocked by police vehicles.

We had to take a detour which took us a couple of miles out of the way. 

We took the next trolley going to Pigeon Forge which also had to take a detour. 

This ended up being an all-day event. 

It was late when we arrived back at our hotel. 

Day 3: Sunday, July 23, 

We ate bagels with cream cheese for breakfast. 

Packed our bags, loaded the car, and headed for home. 

We stopped at a couple of rest areas. 

We had snacks with us so we did not stop to eat until we got home. 

2023 July 12, Popes Tavern, Indian Mound Museums Florence, AL.

 Today we took  Ava to see UNA's mascot LEO but he was sleeping. 

Leo is getting old and since his mate died he has not been as active. 

I took her around the campus showing her the Smith Bell Tower, the president's home "Wesleyan Hall, constructed in 1856, is one of the oldest structures on the University of North Alabama campus." The building looks like a castle.

The campus fountain was turned off because of a leak. 

We next stopped at Pope's Tavern where Ava learned about how the tavern was used as a hospital during the Civil War. Early cooking tools, furniture from the Forks of Cypress, and Civil War artifacts. 

Ava asks the curator several questions about the articles in the museum. 

We also visited the building that held information about the processing of cotton.

Our next stop was the Indian Mound. 

She and I both walked to the top of the mound. Lots of steps!

43 feet Earthen Mound was built about 500 BCE. 

Inside the museum, Ava learned about the timeline of the Native Americans during the Paleo-Indian Period, the Archaic Period, the Woodland Period, and the Mississippian and Historic Periods. 

We saw arrowheads and many American Indian artifacts. 

On the way home we stopped at McDonalds to get Ava a kids chicken nugget meal. 

We stopped at Smokin Jalapeño for tacos. 

We took our food home to eat. 

2023 July 8, Day Trip Franklin, Brentwood, TN. and Huntsville, AL.

We started the day by eating Gravy and Biscuits at Jacks then Birding in McFarland Park. We could see the rain coming down the river so we loaded into the car.

Then we rode to Best Buy in Huntsville to buy a Canon EOS R6 Camera and stopped at Sam's Club for fuel. 

We had no luck at Best Buy so we decided to ride to Best Buy Brentwood, Tennessee. 

Hubby was going to take a shortcut but ended up taking a long way. We rode to Maradinville and stopped at Ardmore Welcome Center on I-65.

We stopped at Best Buy where we purchased the Canon EOS R6 camera. 

It was way after lunch so we stopped at Mellow Mushroom in Franklin. We ordered a small Pacific Rim Pizza. (Mellow red sauce with Mozzarella, ham, bacon, caramelized onions, pineapple, and Jalapeños.)

We headed back home I reached into my purse to play video games on the way home but my phone was not in my purse. 

I took hubby's phone and called mine. The manager at Mellow Mushroom answered. I told him who I was and we were on our way back to get my phone. 

When we arrived hubby could not find a parking place so he let me out and circled around. I went inside and told the hostess who I was and was there to pick up my cell phone. 

I thanked them for finding it and putting it in a safe place. 

It had begun to rain when hubby picked me up and it stormed all the way home. 

I am so glad I noticed my phone missing before we got home. It is about 2 hours to Franklin. 

2023 August 3, Alabama Music Hall of Fame & Railroad Museum TUSCUMBIA, AL

Our first stop was the dentist. I had two teeth pulled Friday and the dentist wanted to see how they were healing. 

We rode to Tuscumbia to tour the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Our granddaughter now loves to go to museums and I thought she would enjoy this one. 

We stopped outside the museum for a couple of pictures.

Bought our tickets and the lady at the ticket counter gave Ava a Scavenger Hunt sheet.

The sheet had a list of 10 different animals to be found throughout the museum. 

She told Ava once she completed the task she would get a prize.

(Dog, fish, snake, peacock, monkey, opossum, horse, rooster, fish,? )

As we walked through the museum we looked at the animals and well as looking at the displays.

She liked the display of Nat King Cole the Alabama Bus, and many others.

We got down to number ten the monkey on the list and walked back through the museum looking for a monkey.

We got a hint it was on a hat of Clint Eastwood and near the end of the displays.

She found it and headed to the gift shop for her surprise.

She picked a whistle and a star keychain.

Ava and I were at the Entrance Door as we were leaving. 

Next, we rode to the Tuscumbia train Depot but it was closed. 

We did see the trains on the back side.

We rode to Florence and ate lunch at Chick-fil-A.

Ava ordered a kid's meal with chicken nuggets, waffle fries, and Chocolate milk. She also ordered ice cream but didn't eat it. I finished it off.

Once she finished eating she wanted to go play so I said go on.

2023 July 18-21, Trip to The Alpine Village of Helen, Georgia (4 days)

 Day 1: Tuesday, July 18:

We left home about 6 A.M. stopping at Jacks in Athens for biscuits and gravy. 

We continued through Huntsville, taking Hwy 72 toward Scottsboro through (hwy 35)Mento crossing the Tennessee River,  to (Hwy 40) Hangar, Valley Head, and Mento crossing into Georgia.

In Georgia, we traveled through Summerville, Rome onto the I-75 bypass of Atlanta. We went through Cartersville, Marietta taking 400 north bypassing Atlanta to Dahlonega, Cleveland, and 75 to Helen.

We checked into the Castle Inn around 2:25 p.m. and took all our luggage up two flights of stairs (they had no elevator.)

We walked down the front of the hotel to the nearby Troll Tavern. The Tavern was along the Chattahoochee  River with a gate covered in locks weighing it down. There was a sign that said no more locks and all locks had to be removed. It was causing the gate to be unstable and unsafe.

While we were waiting for a table we watched hundreds of people tubing down the Chattahoochee River on green, pink, and blue tubes.

We ordered Reuben on toast with mashed potatoes and Diet Coke. I think they were short-staffed because there were lots of empty tables and people waiting to be served.

We walked around the town and some of the places we saw were: The Wooden Toys, Assay Station, Welcome to Wildwood, Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen, Wilkommen, Helen Hat, Grimm's Weg, Sock Store, Christmas & More, Christoff's Seventy-six, Helendof Inn, Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf, Pepper Place, Dizzy Bear,  Cowboys and Angels, The Christmas Shop, just to name a few.

It was a beautiful day but very hot so we walked back to the Castle Inn and rested until around 7PM. 

We left the Castle Inn and walked across the bridge stopping for a picture at the Cafe International (head in the hole), the Mural of Helendof Inn. I continued walking passed the Alpine Wedding Chapel, Fashall where they were playing bingo. I saw the Pirates Cove Miniature Golf and Alpine Village Inn. 

I walked to Wendy's where I had left hubby and he bought us a strawberry frosty and Diet Coke. 

We walked back to our car and rode to Cleveland stopping at the White County Courthouse to take a few pictures. 

Day 2: Wednesday, July 19:

Early morning I took my journal outside onto the balcony and began to write. I watched as the town slowly came alive. I could hear the birds chirping in the distance and could feel the cool breeze and the sky was full of clouds. The only people that I saw were early-morning workers. 

We were at the Waffle House when it opened at 8AM. I ordered 3 pecan pancakes with whipped cream and Diet Pepsi. Hubby ordered 2 eggs, sausage, 3 pancakes with gravy, biscuits and hash browns.

We rode to the visitors center there they gave us a map of Helen and suggested places we should visit. 

She said Anna Ruby Falls, Sautee General Store, Hardman's Farm & Indian Mound, and the Covered Bridge. 

We walked through Veterans Park taking pictures the park was behind the Visitors Center. 

We rode to Unite State Park to see Anna Ruby Falls but before we began our climb uphill to the falls it began to sprinkle so hubby went back to the car for the umbrella. 

We had to stop several times to rest during our climb uphill. There were stone benches along the path. 

It was getting slippery with all the light rain but we finally made it. Hubby stopped just short of the falls Hubby talked to a couple while I walked to the top.

We also met a family with teenagers walking up the hill and they passed us coming down. Several people were visiting Anna Ruby Falls. 

Our next stop was Baby-land The Cabbage Patch Doll Hospital. Baby cabbage patches were planted all around the hospital. When you walked inside there were pictures of famous people on the walls. 

There were several different rooms of dolls and scenery it was overwhelming.

It was hard to choose which baby to adopt but I settled on Sandy Sue. 

Everyone crowded around to watch the birth & the storytelling of a baby boy Cabbage Patch Doll. 

Our next stop was the White County Courthouse Museum.

It had already closed the day before so we rode back today. 

Several ladies were sitting around a table talking they were members of the Historic Society of White County. 

One of them told us the history of the museum. 

We could hear music coming from upstairs. There was a man in the Old Courtroom playing a fiddle.

I saw a replica of the Covered Bridge and asked questions about it and its location.

Our next stop was the Hardman Farm State Park.  We had to park on the hill and walk down several flights of stairs to the Visitor Center so hubby did not want to walk around the farm.

He bought me a ticket and I walked around taking pictures of the building and historic markers.

I met a couple of women also taking pictures of markers to be read later. 

Hubby was in the car waiting for me at the bottom of the hill.

Next, we rode to Stovall Covered Bridge and Old Sautee General Store.

The Stovall Covered Bridge has been washed away three times. 

We stopped at Walgreens in Cleveland for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a couple of Heath Bars. 

We stopped at Nora Granary Mill where we bought some stone mill cornmeal. 

We ate dinner at Wendy's then back to Castle Inn. (Hamburger and fries)

We watched the new Ghost Buster Movie.

I walked outside to talk to my daughter and to write in my journal. 

It had been a full day. 

Day 3: Thursday, July 20:  

We rode to McDonalds in Cleveland bought a muffin with sausage and hubby ordered a big breakfast. 

Today we rode to North Georgia Wildlife and Safari Park in Cleveland, GA.  We walked through the petting zoo and then drove through the Safari where we saw buffalo, Elk, Deer, Emu, Ostrich, camels, Zebra, and several small animals. 

I was not too impressed.

Next, we rode to Brasstown Bald Hiawassee, GA (the highest point in Georgia) and paid $8 to ride the shuttle van up to the overlook and visitor center. 

It was too foggy to see very far but we did enjoy the Visitor Center museum.

In the museum, we saw several handmade quilts hanging on the walls.

We saw several different forest animals, a log with a saw, a train engine, displays, etc. 

Saw several barn Swallows and Gray Catbirds. 

We rode the shuttle bus back down the mountain. 

We stopped at Chick-fil-A in Cleveland for dinner. I ordered a kid's chicken finger meal with waffle fries and ice cream. 

It was raining when we returned to the Castle Inn. 

I sat outside on the balcony listening to the band in the restaurant across the street. 

It was a stormy night and very few people were outside. 

Day 4: Friday, July 21:

2023 July 7, Day trip to Savannah and Shiloh, Tennessee

 We started our day at the Tennessee River Museum in Savannah. 

A true air-breathing MOSASAUR

The City of Florence, a St. Louis and Tennessee River Packet Company boat, was named to honor the fast-growing city at the foot of Muscle Shoals. Upbound near Coffee Landing on February 8, 1913, she got out of control and was lying cross-stream when the towboat Tomahawk, down-bound and loaded with crossties, rammed and sunk her. One member of the crew and a young passenger lost their lives in the accident.

The picture below is the ship of 2 girls.

12-year-old Ruth Tarbet (left) was one of two casualties of the sinking ship. The daughter of a prominent Saltillo merchant, Ruth, and her daughter had boarded the doomed steamer for the short trip to visit relatives in Savannah.

We stopped to get pictures of the cannons and cannon balls before crossing the Tennessee River and heading to Shiloh.

We ate fried catfish, coleslaw, hush puppies, and grilled veggies. Ava ate fried chicken fingers and fries. She said that was the best chicken fingers she ever ate and she told our waitress she rated the food at 100. She ate every bite. We took several pictures at the restaurant and near the Tennessee River.

If the walls of the cabin could talk they would reveal the intriguing story of an extraordinary yet wonderful, resident for many years, Garfield Luster.
The story begins on a hot summer day around 1920 when Garfield is given a ride by Mr. Narvin Hagy, a local traveling salesman.
During this time, Garfield worked for a family that had mistreated him for many years. He decided to flee from this harsh environment at which time he met Mr. Norvin Hagy on an old gravel road. 
Mr. Hagy lived on a large farm bonding the Shiloh National Military. His parents were Frank and Mary Hagy. Frank, who had grown up on the farm, was a young boy of 13 when the "Battle of Shiloh" took place around their home in April 1862.
Garfield eventually planted his roots with the Hagy family and over the years developed a close bond with them.
During the many decades, he lived with the Hagy family, he helped care for four generations.

He not only cooked, but also laundered, and did other basic chores around the house, but also helped raise the youngsters... a duty he enjoyed the most. He nurtured the young family of Norvin and Dorothy Hagy, showering upon them devotion and care as if they were his own children. 
But Garfield did more than comfort, console and when necessary scold the children, he could also entertain them as well. 

Many years before the fables of Uncle Remas were popularized by Hollywood, Garfield charmed the young Hagys with his folktales of Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox. Another of his talents was acting. He could dress up as a comical character called "Aunt Emiley" and play her so convincingly that the c children momentarily would forget that they were watching Garfield in disguise.


One of Garfield's favorite stories was his explanation of how he got his name. Garfield always chuckled when he told how Garfield was bestowed upon him following the assassination of President Garfield.

Like his namesake, Garfield had experienced hard times: he refused to dwell on the past, only occasionally recalling his unhappy childhood. Garfield was born and raised in the small rural community of Red Bay in North Alabama, probably the son of a former slave.
Garfield was deprived of a formal education although he was highly intelligent and could have done well in school if he had been given the opportunity.

Even though he was not articulate, his speech was peppered with homespun, folksy southern colloquialism, slow as molasses, dead as a doornail, hot a blue blazes, sharp as a tack, strong as an ox, to quote a few.

Garfield lived a long and happy life in Shiloh with the Hagy family.
However, he suffered much bereavement at the death of Norvin Hagy in 1960, never fully recovering from the loss of a man who had provided a sanctuary for the greater part of his life. 

Shortly after Mr. Hagy's death in 1961 Garfield was diagnosed with prostate cancer. During the last weeks of his life, Norvin Hagy Jr and his wife Teke took Garfield home for a final visit with his relatives who at the time were living in Mississippi.
After his funeral at his church, Saint Rest in Guys, Tennessee attended by the Hagy Family, Garfield was laid to rest nearby in a small grove of trees. 
The Hagys will always remember Garfield with much love and gratitude as a person who embraced and enriched their lives.

Next, we stopped at Shiloh Battle Field. The Museum was closed for repairs but you could watch a film. We did not stay to watch the movie. We heard gunfire and went to check it out.

There was a young man (Park Ranger)doing a reenactment and was finishing up when we arrived. But he did show Ave the bullet, and let her feel the weight of the gun ( I think he said it weighed 10 lbs.) When we stopped at the Tennessee River Museum there was a gun ball behind glass that you could put your hand through to see if you could pick it up with one hand, that weighed 7 lbs. So she compared the two.

We stopped at the Book Museum where we bought her a book about not being a Nurse in the Civil War. We walked to the National Cemetery where a young woman was giving a talk about the battles between the North and South at Pittsburg Landing.

Ava had read several pages about the Civil War in her book and was asking several questions about the War.

The Park Ranger finished her talk but Ava kept asking her questions. It began to sprinkle so we hurried back to the car. We rode around the park stopping for a few pictures.

We stopped at the old log cabin church to take a few pictures.

We started for home and the sky got darker and darker and it began to rain. The closer we got to Alabama the harder it rained.

Our last stop was at Wendy's for a Strawberry Frosty. That's what Ava wanted and I had never tried one. We all ordered a Strawberry Frosty and it was good. Ava and I played a game all the way home in our Imaginary worlds.

2023 June 21, The Yellow Deli, Pulaski, Etheridge, Lawrenceburg and Lynnville, Tennessee

 Today we rode to Lawrenceburg. 

Goodwill did not open until 9AM so we stopped at Dunkin's Donuts for bacon bites and 2 minis, bagels.

Next, we stopped at Goodwill where I bought 2 men's shirts and a quilt.

We love to buy veggies from the Amish so we rode to Etheridge where we bought 2 large heads of cabbage, Squash, onion, peppers, cucumbers, eggs, candy, peanuts, and potatoes.

We had the whole day free no grandkids to watch.

So we rode to Pulaski stopping at the Yellow Deli for lunch. 

There we ordered a Ruben sandwich which is corned beef, with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, mayo, and mustard on light rye bread served with chips and pickle.

We also ordered a side salad and for dessert a slice of their delicious carrot cake. 

We ordered iced tea to drink and hubby knocked his over while trying to take a picture of a plant.

Their food is always fresh and delicious.

We rode to Lynnville, TN to tour the Train Depot Museum (rebuilt as RR Museum 1998)and the steam locomotive. We walked through the Locomotive, passenger cars, and the little red Caboose.

In the museum were several displays including a miniature train display.

Across the street was Soda Pop Junction and Big Johnny's Burgers which was closed for repairs.

In front of those buildings sat an Orange and White Dodge truck, carousel, old bicycle, coke machine, and parking meters.

There were public restrooms next to Lynnville's City Hall.

We saw the Iron Horse Hotel, Iron Horse Country Store, and a Historic Marker.

It began to rain so I only had time to take a picture of the Marker before we headed back to the car.

Lynnville Historic District 
Construction of the Nashville & Decatur Railroad and the partial burning of Old Lynnville (Waco) by Federal troops brought this charming town to its present location after the Civil War. The Lynnville National Register Historic District (1988) contains 59 buildings, with architectural examples from each period of the town's development from the 1860s through the early 1900s.

We rode back to Pulaski, stopping at Walmart and Murphys(gas). In Pulaski, we stopped at The Butcher Shop for some homegrown fresh meat.

We stopped at Flatrock Cheese where we bought 3 different cheeses, some fried pies, stick candy, and a pint jar of local honey.

Then home by way of Minor Hill, TN.
