2018 May 29-Jun 2, 🚙The sandy beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama

Tuesday, May 29, 2018
Loaded my new Nissan Murano with my suitcase and camera and drove to my sisters to meet them for our trip. While waiting for them to finish getting ready I went outside and took some pictures. There were birdhouses in different shapes and sizes filled with bird feed atop tall poles, along with wind-chimes, and deer antlers.
Standing next to a mailbox, I saw a bicycle covered with vines of purple flowers, its basket was filled with lots of pink flowers.
Sitting next to a gate, and next to a pink rose bush,  with some faded and crumbling blooms,
sat on a wooden bench, that read School Bus
On top, of the fence post, See Rock City, on both sides red rose bushes stood a birdhouse.
A flower bed with several greenery plants, stepping pads, a wooden bench, a wagon wheel, a pot, and water flowing from a small pump down a wooden plank into a bucket.
All this was enclosed and the ground was covered in mulch, a birdhouse, and a fence on the backside. There was a brick path leading up to the home next to the path stood another flower bed, a tall pole with a birdhouse, a wooden sign that read HOME, and atop was a big black dinner bell. All around the home were flowerbeds dotted with greenery and orange/yellow tubed blooms. In the distance stood an outhouse, with a washtub hanging on the side. A cabin with wooden steps on two sides, two wagon wheels, a dipper, cowbells, a bucket, and other paraphernalia hanging from the porch. A black mailbox number 146 standing next to the steps waiting for delivery. Jumping, playing, and hiding among the tall flowers was their bulldog puppy.
Red Roses
We have had lots of rain during April and May and today was no exception.
It started to rain and rained most of the day. The rain lessened the further south we went.
We enjoyed lunch at Dairy Queen in Northport near Tuscaloosa. We stopped at Chick-fil-A in Foley for dinner. It was getting late when we arrived at Island Winds East. Unloaded the car and headed to the beach. My niece and her friend had never seen the Ocean/Gulf and were very excited. The water was still very turbulent from the storm that had come through a few days before.
There was a full moon overlooking the Gulf the night we arrived.

Wednesday, May 30
Around six AM I walked to the sand-covered beach, there were a few people out and about, some watching the sunrise, some looking for shells, and some walking and wading in the water.
It looked like a fire breaking through the clouds as the sun began to shine. It was going to be another hot day.
Everyone enjoyed playing in the gulf. It was too hot for me so I got into the swimming pool and later went back to the room.
Around seven I walked down to the concrete boardwalk to watch the sunset. There were several tarps above concert benches with palm trees around each area. Footprints covered the sand and silence filled the air along the beach.
As I neared the Hangout I could hear a band playing
Sunrise
Thursday, May 31
With my camera, I walked to the quiet beach around 7 AM.
There I saw a few white & pink clouds floating above the Gulf as the sun began to rise.
A few birds were feeding, few people setting up for the day but still very quiet. Going to be another hot day.
Around noon we went to the theme park OWA in Foley.
The ground at the park was covered in Concrete making for an even hotter day.
We rode several rides but had the most fun in the kiddy area.
Enjoyed a banana split Ice Cream at Hershey Ice Cream Parlor.
At Wahlburgers everyone ordered hamburgers and fries, and I ordered chicken fingers.
Katie enjoyed the splash pad where buckets of water splashed over her head.

Friday, June 1
Up and down to the beach at 6AM to watch the sunrise. A few clouds covered the sky, the waves not quite so turbulent, and not as many birds. The storm had brought high waves and in those waves were schools of fish.
The sun was up, and it was getting hot as my sister and I walked down to the Hangout stopping to take a picture in the BIG BLUE chair.
Gulf Shores Hangout
Everyone enjoyed another day at the beach, not me I went sightseeing.
I drove to Elberta to see dinosaurs and arrived around 10AM. Stopped at a Marathon Gas Station in Elberta to fill it with gas, and to purchase a coke and cookies.
Dinosaur Park
I drove to Fort Morgan and toured the Museum where I saw Mobile Point Lighthouse Order Fresnel Lens (1873-1966), a 32-pound Carronade, a picture of Admiral David Farragut, Civil War Artillery at Fort Morgan, & Last Campaign Federal Operations at Mobile March thru April 1865.
There were war signs posted along the walls, “I want you for US Army, Join the Army Air Service, Help Them Keep your war sayings PLEDGE, Tell that to the Marines Men wanted for the Army and etc.” Army returns to Fort Morgan 1989, A gallant officer and gentleman Lieutenant Colonel Charles S. Stewart. The Big Gun Corps at Fort Morgan had several uniforms and guns. I walked around inside the Fort and drove around the outside of the fort. It was just too hot to stay for very long.
I drove to Foley where I toured the Train Depot and the L & N. Red Caboose stationed outside the Museum.
Inside the museum, I saw a statue sitting on a long bench, a bell, a set of faded blue luggage, and a stove with a metal kettle sitting on top. I saw an empty trunk, a closed trunk, and a Piano with a songbook opened to the song DEAD MARCH IN SAUL on page 87.
Song Book at Train Depot
I saw a wheel barrel with a sack of Hollywood-washed potatoes, two old-style telephones, the sign “No Longer a 'ONE CROP” Country, a couple of washtubs, a Mother’s Best Flower sign, a ringer Washing machine, an Ice Box and a Potato Grader.
I walked across the street where I toured the Holmes Medical Hospital Museum.
There I saw wheelchairs, hospital rooms, a doctor's office, examining rooms, medical equipment, bedpans of every shape and size, medical books, an Ex-ray Room, medicine bottles, scales, a skeleton, a sink, a washtub, an Incubator for infants and so much more.
I walked up the street to the Art Museum flowers were in bloom everywhere. Painted on the Foley Coffee Shop was a man standing next to a red truck, a train engine # 1701 with smoke coming out of an airplane flying overhead.

Mural
I walked to the overpass, took the elevator up crossed the road to Heritage Park, stopped at the Visitor Center, and drove back to Condo.
We ate dinner at Desoto’s Seafood Cafe the place was packed.

Saturday, June 2,
Up early once again to white clouds with the sun trying to break through, the beach was quiet, and the sand was covered in footprints, going to be another hot day.
I drove over to the Wetlands and walked across the wooden bridge. There were two young from Texas fishing. I took a few pictures as I walked along the bridge.

Rode back to the Condo packed and drove home.

1998~ November 25-28, Trip to Graceville, Florida

Day 1: Wednesday, November 25, 1998
I traveled with Mike, his family, and Ronald to Graceville Florida to visit my younger son and his family.

Day 2: Thursday, November 26, 1998
Robin & Charity spent all morning cooking the Thanksgiving dinner.
The kids played outside and the weather was very warm,
The Macy’s Thanksgiving parade was playing on the television.

Day 3: Friday, November 27, 1998
We went shopping and we left the boys with my sons they were all watching football games.
In 1998, the Pittsburg, Steelers, and Detroit Lions went to overtime. Pittsburgh's Jerome Bettis called the coin toss in the air, but confusion surrounded the call. The officials misheard Pittsburgh's call and awarded Detroit the ball, which went on to win 19-16 on their first drive in overtime. Because of the fiasco, team captains are now required to call the coin toss before the coin is tossed.
Minnesota vs.Vikings score is 46 to Dallas Cowboys 36.

Charity, Robin, Sierra, Hannah and I left early for the early morning Black Friday Sales at Wal-Mart.
It was a madhouse at the crowded Wal-Mart, where everyone was grabbing, shoving, and pushing to get the early morning sales.
Ronald needed a new television, I found one at Wal-mart, I did not have a shopping cart to put the television in so, I sat on the television box, so no one would take it.
Finally, someone offered me a shopping cart, I loaded the television into the cart Sierra and I walked to the checkout counter.
Robin and Charity were standing in the checking line.
We rode to the outlet mall where we shopped for several hours.

Day 4: Saturday, November 28, 1998
Saturday morning we packed a picnic lunch, we all rode to Panama City Beach.
At the beach, we built sandcastles in the sand, swam in the Gulf, and played football in the sand.
It was a great day to be on the beach because it was not crowded.

Day 5: Sunday, November 29, 1998
Our trip home was a little crowded because we had to make room for the television that I had bought at Wal-mart on Black Friday.

🚙2015 ~ Jan 20-22, Road trip to Gulf Shores, AL

Early Tuesday Morning I ask hubby if he wanted to go on a road trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Day 1: January 20, 2015
We were on the road at 10:00 am.
We stopped at 10:40 am at Chick-fil-a in Athens to use the restrooms and eat an early lunch.
We both ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, diet coke, un-sweeten tea (me) and we shared a large order of waffle fries.
We both had a calendar card that we used for a free grilled chicken sandwich and a drink.
Our final cost was $1.80.
We traveled US 72 to I-65 from Athens to Birmingham where we saw signs for places like Hartselle, Vinemont, Cullman, Hanceville, Warrior, Gardendale, Fultondale, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, and Hoover.
We passed through Birmingham where we saw several very tall buildings and the Vulcan statue facing downtown Birmingham.
We stayed on I-65 passing through Pelham, Alabaster, Montevallo (home of the American Village), Jemison, Clanton, (rest area) Millbrook, and Prattville into Montgomery.
We saw as we crossed the bridge the tall downtown building of Montgomery.
We stayed on I-65 South toward Greenville, Georgina, Evergreen, (another rest stop and restroom break) and Atmore.
We turn east onto Highway 287 toward Bay Minette and then we turned onto highways 59/31 south, which took us through the town of Stapleton where highway 59 went southeast and highway 31 went southwest.
We stayed on highway 59 east, which took us through the town of Loxley.
At Loxley, we took Highway 90, which took us through the towns of Robertsdale, Summerdale, Foley, to Gulf Shores.
Our first stop was at Gulf Shores Public Beach where we walked on the sandy beach.
Gulf Shores Beach feeding birds
There were a couple of young men trying to surf but the waves were too small.
We saw a woman with birds flocking all around her; they were waiting for her to feed them. Finally, she ran out of bread and said to the birds, “I am sorry but the food is all gone as she walked away.”
We got back into the van and hubby drove us a little further down the beach.
We stopped to watch the sunset.
It was amazing watching the sun go from a bright yellow into an orange, red as it slowly disappeared into the Gulf which took just minutes.

There were many people there just to watch the sunset, some walked along the beach, others stood under the shelter while others sat in their vehicles facing the sun.

Everyone was spellbound at the sight.

Sunset at Gulf Shores
Hubby drove us to Lulu’s 200 East 25th Avenue Gulf Shores, Ala.
We could hear music and someone singing as we approached the restaurant.
We were greeted and taken to table 43, which had a great view of BAT who was entertaining the crowd.
BAT is a singer-songwriter, heavy folk, and acoustic entertainer.
BAT sounds like The Beatles, Queen, Simon & Garfunkel, Billy Joel, and Eagles.

LULU'S
He had the audience singing the lyrics of many different songs along with him.
He did many old television show theme songs such as Green Acres, The Brady Bunch, The Adams Family.
We ordered the Big Fry Seafood Basket (serves 2), which includes shrimp, Oysters, Crab Claws, and Fried Fish.
Big Fry Seafood Basket
The meal was served with French fries, coleslaw, and hushpuppies $30.99.
After a very good meal, and awesome entertainment we left Lulu’s and Hubby drove us to Staybridge Suite.

We checked in and took our luggage to room 315 on the third floor.
Tonight at the hotel, they were having a wine tasting so we came back downstairs to sample the different wines.
On the food bar, there was Mac & cheese, & Fiesta Salad, with all the beer on tap and soda that you could drink.
There were about seven different kinds of wines and I sampled all of them but the only one that I liked was the white Zinfandel.
It was a social hour and we talked to a couple from Atlanta, GA. They were like us getting away from the cold and sickness.
Hubby talked to another man about politics.
We finished our wine went upstairs and soaked in a tub of hot water, watched some TV and went to bed.

Day 2: Wednesday, January 21, 2015
The next morning we both took a shower, dressed and went downstairs for breakfast, which was about 7AM.
I ate an omelet, two sausage links, covered in syrup, a few walnuts, and diet coke. Hubby ate an omelet, two sausage links, ham, a burrito and drank a glass of orange juice.

We went back upstairs grabbed our luggage; looking around to make sure we were not leaving anything and checked out.
We thanked the woman at the register told her how much we enjoyed our stay and would defiantly return.
Hubby drove us back to the public beach for one last walk on the sandy beach and where I could take some early morning pictures.

Gulf Shore Waves
He then drove us to Orange Beach, FL so I could purchase 10.00 worth of scratch-offs. I won eighteen dollars that were eight dollars more than I started with.

We rode back to Gulf Shores stopped at the restrooms at Gulf shore Park and then we're on our way home.
We stopped at Burris Farm Market in Loxley where we purchased a bag of Pecans/Walnuts for $10.88, boiled peanuts $2.99, Molasses $5.99 and banana blueberry bread $2.99; we spent $24.91.
We walked back to the van got inside to put our purchase in the back seat. I reached back for the banana bread for I wanted a slice but it was not in the bag.
I walked back inside and told the woman at the register she had forgotten to give us one of our bags.
She apologized and I said if I had not looked inside for the bread we would drove off without the bread and Molasses.
I got a plastic knife to cut the bread from the bakery.

We were going to stop at Peach Park for some peach ice cream and peach pie but they were closed for a private party.
We stopped at Munchies Chevron in Calera, Al to fill up with gas. Cost $35.00 price $2.13 for unleaded plus and held 16.36 gallons.
We stopped a couple times at rest stops but did not stop again until we reached Athens.
In Athens, we stopped at DQ where I ordered a chili with cheese hot dog with onion rings and diet coke.
Hubby ordered a hamburger with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles with French fries and diet coke.
Our last stop was at Lucky’s car wash at 4:09PM spent $8.00.
We were home just before 5pm.
We had a wonderful trip, where we walked along the sandy beaches of Gulf Shores, watch the sun fade into the gulf, ate seafood at Lulu’s, tasted wine at Staybridge Suites, won $8 on scratch off ‘s in Orange Beach, had a restful sleep at Staybridge Suites and a safe ride home.
Who could ask for more?
