2024 April 6, Huntsville Twickenham Walking Tour

Walking tour Twickhbam in Huntsville

I think we had over 60 people on the tour.

The group taking the tour

White Dogwood Blooms

What a beautiful day for a walking tour of Twickenham. With every step we took, we learned about the early settlers of Huntsville.

It was steeped in history from the early 1800s.

It felt like we were walking in a botanical garden with all the colorful Azelas and pink and white dogwood trees in full bloom. The aroma of lilac filled the air from the Lilac bushes and tulips with shiny white faces. Music filled the air with Robins, Blue Jays, Finch, and Woodpecker chirping.

After the tour, we rode to Bridge Street Centre, stopping at the Cheesecake Factory for lunch.

SkinnyLicious® Avocado Tacos

Roadside Sliders

Hubby ordered Roadside Sliders*

Bite-sized burgers on Mini-Buns Served with Grilled Onions, Pickles, and Ketchup, and I ordered SkinnyLicious® Avocado Tacos.

Fresh Jicama “Tortilla” Shells Filled with Crispy Avocado, Tomatillo Slaw and Cilantro

We also ordered a slice of the Original cheesecake.

We were too full to eat the cheesecake, so we brought it home.

2023 Dec 8, Moulton on the Square Moulton, Al "CHRISTMAS"

We left Cullman, traveling 157 Highway toward Moulton.

We always attend Moulton on the Square, but this year, due to ongoing renovations at the old courthouse, the festival was at the Lions Club Fair Grounds.

A large crowd was already there enjoying the festival.

The entrance to the Christmas Festival

We saw several displays and places to stop for photos.

We saw Santa Claus talking to the children.

Vendors selling their wear.

The smell of food filled the air.

We enjoyed Tiny Hiney's Petting Zoo, where we saw goats, sheep, Lama, Kangaroo, cow, & poney.

Each animal was wearing Christmas attire.

Poney dressed in Red

As we were leaving, the snow machine began to fill the air with snow. The children enjoyed the snow falling on their faces.

Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

2023 Dec 8, German Christkindlmarkt Cullman, Al

We traveled 157 to Cullman to see the German Christkindlmart. We saw Ice Skating, a Christmas Carousel, Mrs Clause, Christkindl Express, several warming tents, and vendors selling unique merchandise there.

To ride the Christmas train or Christmas Carousel, all you have to do is purchase your tickets via a virtual queue system that allows you to virtually get in line without having to wait. Cost $3

Christmas Train

We didn't see Santa Clause, but we did see Mrs. Clause and Christkind.

Lots of activities for little ones to do.

Toy making with Santa,

Painting with Emily

Decorating cookies with Mrs. Clause

Snow Globes with Mrs. Clause

Charm Bracelets and Wooden Toy Trains with Mrs. Clause

Making ornaments with the Grinch

Elf yourself with Buddy the Elf

Nutcracker painting with Christkind

And Ice Skating.

 pretzel bratwurst

We walked around the square a couple of times, stopping for a pretzel bratwurst (delicious) and a drink.

We sat at a large picnic table enclosed on three sides. There, we met a couple from Birmingham. A member of Good Bellows stopped and Played Jingle Bells while I played along with the handbells.

Played Jingle Bells

We sat and talked for several minutes. The couple left, and we followed suit.

Manger Scene

We also saw the manger scene.

We saw North America's largest Christmas Pyramid Lights.

Did you know that nativity scenes are the heart and soul of German Christkindlmarkt?

These festive markets are not just about shopping they are also a celebration of tradition and faith.

Despite evolving styles and changing times, nativity scenes remain a cherished and enduring tradition.

This extraordinary handcrafted Nativity display, a true work of art, was skillfully crafted by the renowned German company Erzgebirgische Holzkunst Gajlenz- the same talented artisans behind the Welhnachten pyramid.

But that is not all! The Cullman Parks, Recreation, and Sports Tourism maintenance team played an integral role in constructing the stable that houses these exquisite figures. This collaboration between tradition and modern craftsmanship brings to life a Nativity scene that beautifully embodies the spirit of Christmas.

We finished taking pictures and headed to the car.

2023 Jan 7, Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Event

Yesterday, hubby and I went to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, which was an event with Joe Wheeler State Park.

There, we meet up with a group from Oak Mountain in Birmingham.

Groups were coming from several other places.

There were so many cars that the park ranger had to direct traffic. Many parked along the side of the road, and many parked across the highway. Next week is the big event for Wheeler Wildlife Refuge glad we went today.

Hubby and I walked to the new observation building, which is where we saw the five Whooping Cranes with my new scope.

We also saw thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Ducks, and geese.

Cypress Trees

Next, we took the Cypress Tree Trail, which is a walkway across a wooden bridge and all around is filled with Cypress Trees.

We could loudly hear Blue Jay calling out to each other. We heard White-breasted Nuthatches (what we call upside-down birds). We heard Red-winged Blackbirds, European Starlings, and Eastern Phoebe, and we saw and heard a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

We walked to another observation station and didn't see any cranes but saw several Robins hopping around looking for food.

Hubby went back to the car, and I walked to the two-story Observation building that offers a wonderful enclosed view of our winter surroundings.

View of Sandhill Cranes, Ducks, and Geese from the Observation building

That is where I met several members of a photo club from Gatlinburg. They said that they would have a booth set up at Gatlinburg's Wildlife Week and said to look for them if I went that week.

I saw a small boy enjoying kicking and picking up gravel as his family walked to the Observation building.

Walked back to the car, and we rode across the road to see more cranes.

We only saw a few but met several women from the Birmingham Area.

They were taking pictures. We did see a couple of white egrets.

Our next stop was a target to pick up a couple boxes of Skinny Popcorn.

For lunch, we stopped at Whataburger, where I ordered a #1 Hamburger with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, mustard, and pickles with fries.

It was an overcast day with rain hanging in the air.

Later that night, hubby and I enjoyed dinner with my sisters and brother-in-law. After the meal, we girls played UNO and dominoes.

Had a wonderful day.

We rode to O’Bryan's in Hartselle for lunch, where I ordered a petite sirloin steak with sweet potato, and hubby ordered a Delmonico Steak with baked potato and salad bar.  Ava ordered a hamburger, fries, and doctor's pepper. Ava ate her fried but did not touch her hamburger.  I took pictures of Ave standing next to the Christmas tree, one sitting on the fireplace, one in front of a gasoline pump, the back of an old car, and one sitting on a fire truck.  The decor is the retro front end of Chevy used as a counter and the backside as seating.  There is a room where you can sit in a car and watch TV (like being at a drive-in).
We left there and rode to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge.
I went to see the Sandhill Cranes, Ducks, and Whooping Crane while Ave and hubby stayed in the automobile.  There were thousands of cranes feeding on the grain left by farmers.  There were several people in the view area taking pictures of the birds. Six Sandhill Cranes were sighted, and I saw three. I walked down to the edge of the water to get a closer look at the cranes.

I did not stay long because it was cold.  We saw an inflatable Santa atop a car dealership leaving Decatur.  We stopped at Mike's to see Atlas after we dropped Ava off.  Atlas was driving his jeep, is 18 months old, still sucking on a Passy, and driving that jeep everywhere.  He knows how to make it go but still does not understand how to control it.  It had been a full day with all the activities.  I was ready to lie down to rest.

2022 Jan 15, First Day Hike on Multi-Purpose Trail Wheeler Dam

Today, a group of hikers meets at JWSP Cabin Office (24921 Alabama Hwy 101) for a little over the 2-mile hike. We followed in our cars to the hiking spot "The Multi-purpose Hiking Trail" with park rangers Sam and David. The trail is between Wheeler Dam and Fishmans Resort camping and lodge. It is a scenic loop that runs along the Tennessee River and Big Nance Creek.
Bathhouse
We saw several historic ruins of the 1930s, a bathhouse/restrooms. We saw a couple of overgrown Chimneys and Picnic Tables, once used by the people living here during the building of TVA's Wheeler Dam. We also saw a collapsed viewing area that overlooks the Tennessee River. The rangers said they hoped to get a grant to restore the viewing area. We stopped about midway for a group picture. (The ranger David took our picture with his cell phone and said he would email everyone a copy; I have not received mine yet)
This spot overlooking Big Nance Creek is where the group stopped for a picture. We saw several different kinds of hardwood trees, oak, and hickory. We saw a variety of wild mushrooms & berries that feed the animals that are in the park. We saw signs of deer in the soft mud and could hear the many different sounds of Alabama's songbirds.
Open Pit
We also saw a large open grill/pit used to cook outdoor meals for a large group, overgrown with a tree growing in the middle. It was a very overcast day with a chance of rain and snow. The hike began at noon and ended around 2:30 PM. It began to sprinkle as we were leaving. TVA is planning to build a powerhouse to feed the growing community. Hopefully, they will not destroy too much of the walking forest area.
Mushrooms on log
Everyone received an "I hiked Alabama State Parks New Year's Day." The first-day hike scheduled for Jan 1, 2022, was canceled because of inclement weather. (High winds and threatening tornadoes) and rescheduled for Jan 15, 2022.

Group of hikers

A copy of the group was sent to everyone from Sam and David. We had three dogs, 10 people, plus two park rangers. (One not showing took the picture)

2021 April 3, Florence Cemetery Walking Tour, UNA, McFarland Park, Wilson Dam, & Ava Florence, Alabama

The tour will begin at 705 East College Street, led by Harry Wallace. The tour of the Florence Cemetery, established in 18181, features many unique headstones and famous gravesites among the rolling hills and towering trees.
The cemetery contains the graves of many early settlers, two governors, prominent leaders and families, and many unknown CSA soldiers.

Blooming Cherry Trees
McFarland Par
After the walking tour, I stopped at Wilson Park to see the blooming cherry trees.
Next, I went to UNA to see the newly remodeled fountain. There were people there taking pictures for Graduation. Leo the lion was basking in the sun, and he roared several times. Normally, he just lays quietly, but today, he must have been hungry.

Ava riding her car
I rode to McFarland Park and stopped for a few pictures. The River was down compared to what it had been but still was peeking at the banks. One side of the park was closed because of flooding. There were a lot of people at the park, people were parked everywhere, even on the banks of the road.

I stopped at River Heritage Park and walked to see the floodgates at Wilson Dam. The Tennessee River was raging through.

On my way home, I stopped to check on my son Mike he had surgery on his back. He was outside with his brother Andy. Ava came outside and was riding her car. Saw a Yellow Monarch Butterfly landing on the yellow dandelions.
I had a very interesting day.

Now for the long ride home.
I saw this beautiful pink Rose of Sharon when we stopped at the Nick Jack Rest Area in Chattanooga on our way home.
