✈️✈️✈️1994 ~ Feb 19-22, Trip Berwick, Maine, to visit a friend

I am looking forward to seeing my friend, Velma, and the snow-covered grounds of Berwick, Maine (This is the first time I ever flew by myself)
Waiting for my flight to Portland MA
Day 1: Wednesday, February 19, 1994
So, to prepare for my trip, I packed cuddle duds, sweaters, coats, gloves, jeans, & boots.

Maine is located as far northeast in North America as you can travel to the United States.
The average temperature for this time of the year is F. 35  And the average snowfall is 12.
On February 19, I flew on Delta Airlines from Huntsville, Al., to Atlanta, Georgia, and from Atlanta, Ga., to Berwick, Maine.
Velma was waiting at the airport when I embarked on the plane and she greeted me with a hug.

We collected my luggage and we rode to her apartment.

I unpack, we eat lunch and then we head out to see the sites.

We stop in Somersworth, New Hampshire, for what I do not remember, which borders Berwick, Maine on the Southwest side.
The major routes that pass through Berwick are 6, 9, and 236. Berwick is 1/2 hour from the ocean and one hour from the mountains.

Velma said they have just built our first Walmart store here in Berwick.
We stop at the Insurance Company where Velma works and she introduces me to her co-workers.
Our next stop was a large building that houses a crowded, quaint tavern, on the second floor, there was no elevator and we had to walk up several steps.

Velma took me to visit her friends at the police department, which was located at 11 Sullivan Street Berwick, ME. 03901.

That night we went to a Country and Western club where we danced to the Boot-Scootin' Boogie.

Day 2: Thursday, February 20, 1994
Today we are going to visit Velma’s daughter, she lives in the Bay area outside Boston, which is about an hour's drive.

Velma’s daughter greets us at the door and she proudly shows us her newly remodeled old home.
Her home has two bedrooms upstairs, and the living area is downstairs.
It has a view of the bay and has several large oak trees growing in her backyard.

We are served lunch and after lunch, we ride into Boston.
The traffic is terrible in Boston, and it is easier to park and ride the T.
So we park head for the ticket counter and board the T.

The T is the first subway ever built in the US it has some awesome graphics on the walls.
“FIVE CENTS FAIR LASTED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS”
“PARK STREET – THE FIRST SUBWAY BUILT IN AMERICA”.
1897 is the year on the subway wall.

Boston has the oldest subway and bus system in America, the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority).
A ride on the MBTA or to the locals “The T,” is an adventure visitors to Boston should try.

We get off the T and walk around, stopping at one of the indoor malls (where we all grab a cup of hot chocolate) and then walk to Cheers Pub to eat dinner.

“Bull Finch PUB” Cheers is located next to Hampshire Hotel on 84 Beacon St. Boston, MA. 0210-3421 and the telephone number is 617-227-9605.
We order cocktails while waiting for our food to be served.
For an extra four dollars, you can get a souvenir glass that has “CHEERS” BOSTON written on the glass.
Velma and I each paid the extra four dollars for the souvenir glass.

There is a picture of Kirstie Alley, Kelsey Grammer, and Rhea Perlman hanging on the walls of Cheer.
Velma and I get our picture taken standing in front of this picture.

Tourists still flock to Cheers the Beacon Street Bar, which was the inspiration for the Cheers television series, this series ran for eleven years.

In 1989, when I was at MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida, I had the opportunity to play a part in the making of a skit of Cheers.
At that time, they would choose volunteers from the audience to be in the show.
By the time we left Cheers, it was dark. We walked up Beacon Hill toward the Capitol Building stopping to take some pictures.

From the Capitol Building, we could see the frozen pond in the park below.
People were ice-skating on the frozen pond.

As we walked back to the T, we could feel the cold wind as it whipped around the tall building. We rode back to Velma’s daughter's house where we spent the night.

Day 3: Friday, February 21, 1994
It has always been a dream of mine to take a sleigh ride in the New England area.
For some crazy reason, I have always associated the Christmas Holidays with snow, and a sleigh ride in the New England States.

Maybe it was the Saturday Evening Post print of a snowball fight by J. F.  Kernan. Or maybe the Deadman’s Hill sleigh ride by Norman Rockwell. Or maybe it was a Victorian Christmas by Thomas Kinkade, where you can feel the warm yellow glow from the windows of each and every home as you watch Santa ride down the street in his sleigh.

It was my last night in Berwick and we still had not taken that sleigh ride. So, we drove to Maple Brook Farm where they have sleigh rides but were closing up for the day.
I said please take us on a sleigh ride, for tonight is my last night in Maine, so the owner hooked up his draft horses and his wooden sleigh.

Maple Brook Farm is also known for its potbelly pigs, and while the owner was hitching his draft horses for the sleigh ride, he let us hold the squealing, squirmy pig.

It was a night I will never forget.
It was a full moon that shone down on the forbidden snow as we rode through the woods on a snowy night.
The only signs of life in the snow were the wagon wheels, and hoof prints of the large workhorses as they slowly pulled the wagon (sleigh) through the snow.
What a wonderful way to end my visit with my friend and to have a childhood dream come true.

My wonderful trip to Berwick to visit my friend has now come to a bittersweet end and I have to return to work.

Day 4: Saturday, February 22, 1994
Velma drove me to the airport in Portland, Maine where we said goodbye.
My flight is headed to LaGuardia Airport in New York.

“The LaGuardia airport is located on the waterfront in the Borough of Queens, New York City.  LaGuardia handles mostly domestic flights and is only 9 miles from Midtown Manhattan. It is named after Fiorello LaGuardia, the former mayor of New York. It is the smallest of New York’s three major commercial airports.”

At the airport in LaGuardia, I bought my daughter a T-shirt that said, New York.
One of her dreams is to visit New York City.

I made a quick telephone call home to tell my husband that I had landed in LaGuardia and I was waiting for my flight to Atlanta.

While I was on the telephone, there was an announcement, that said, because of the weather everyone flying to Atlanta had to board another plane.

I looked around and everyone was gone, they had boarded the plane. I almost missed my flight.
I quickly boarded the plane and I was seated between two men.

The man sitting on the right of me was from New York and he had moved to Atlanta, Georgia.
The man on the left of me was from France and he was now living in the United States.

The man from France and I struck up a conversation and we talked the entire flight to Atlanta, Georgia.
During the flight, we were served dinner and the man from France and I kept talking.

The man from Atlanta, Georgia said, “ I have never heard two people talk as much as the two of you.” The man from France was going to Atlanta and needed to know more information about Atlanta, so he struck up a conversation with the man from Atlanta.
The plane landed in Atlanta I said goodbye to both men.
They said goodbye to me and they started walking and talking to each other.
I walked to the waiting area for my flight to Huntsville, Alabama.
That flight took a little over one hour.
My husband was waiting to pick me up at the airport.
My trip had been quite an adventure where, I got to visit my old friend, to take a moonlight sleigh ride; to eat at Cheers in Boston, and to make a new friend on the flight home.

Day 1: Tuesday, December 19, 1989
My daughter, Tom, and I flew on Delta 511 to Orlando, Florida.
Our tickets were purchased at Valley Tour and Travel.
Two adult tickets cost $546.00.
One child’s ticket cost $104.00.
The tickets were for 5 days at the Magic Kingdom, at Epoch, at MGM, a car rental, a night stay at the Polynesian Village Hotel, and three flight tickets to Orlando, FL.

We flew Delta Airlines on jet 511 DC-9 seats ABC row 26 from Huntsville, Al., at 6:42 A.M arriving at Atlanta, Georgia 8:28 A.M. from Atlanta, Georgia on flight 74 at 9:44 A.M. to Orlando, Florida at 11:17 A.M. seats ABC row 28 we went to gate 19.

My daughter and I had never flown before.
The cabin pressure was causing my daughter to have problems with her ears.
I loved the flight!  It reminded me of riding a roller coaster.
We arrived at the Orlando airport, picked up our rental car, and rode to the Polynesian Hotel, where the valet unloaded and parked the car.
We went to the room to freshen up and then we headed out to the Disney parks.
Every morning before entering the parks we would find a breakfast shop where we would eat breakfast.

Day 2: Wednesday, December 20, 1989
The Magic Kingdom was the first theme park that we visited.
Some of the sites that we saw were: It’s a Small World, and Pirates of the Caribbean, we watched the Enchanted Tiki Room Bird Show, rode all the roller coasters, walked up to Peter Pans Tree House, and rode the train.
The crowds started to thin out because of the rain but we just purchased ponchos and stayed at the park.

We ate lunch at one of the theme parks and by the end of the day, we were ready to go back to our room.

The next day we went to MGM where we toured the backlot, where we saw Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom show.
We watched a water show where water was splashed on the audience.
I was selected from the audience to be a character on The Cheers Show.
We saw Chewy a Star Wars Character before we boarded the Star Wars Roller Coaster.
Christmas time is a very busy time at Disney Parks so we had to stand in line for hours.
Once Tom said, and I quote, “Are we having fun yet?”

We were going to Epcot but it poured rain, so we decided to ride over to Cape Kennedy, where we took the bus tour to the launch pad.

That night we rode to the old downtown Orlando.
We saw a Coke Cola shop that still served Coke in a glass bottle.
There was a clown making characters out of balloons and he gave my daughter a balloon.

We dined one night at the Polynesian Hotel Restaurant.
We rode to Downtown Disney it was late and they were closing up shop.
All the theme parks and hotels were beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays.

There was a very large Christmas tree in the center of the lobby at The Polynesian Hotel.

I bought Mickey Ears for my daughter and a Disney hooded sweatshirt for both of us.
It had turned cool and I did not bring anything warm for us to wear.

We had a wonderful trip we visited Disney World, MGM, Downtown Disney, and Cape Kennedy and now it was time to go home and celebrate Christmas with friends and family.

1988 ~Dec 3-4, Weekend trip to Lynchburg, Tennessee

My daughter-in-law worked for Lowe’s of Florence and was offered a position in Tullahoma, TN to work at their grand opening, the weekend of December 3-4 1988.
This was a great opportunity for a getaway trip for all of us.

All expenses were paid by Lowe’s for that weekend for my daughter-in-law which included the cost to stay at the Jameson Inn 2213 N. Jackson St.

The inn was just a few blocks from Lowe’s.

While my daughter-in-law was working, my son, my daughter, and I rode over to Lynchburg to the Jack Daniel Distillery.
It was a bitterly cold winter day and we were the only people taking the tour.

We checked in at the visitor center and then we were taken on a guided tour.
We were shown the barrelhouse, Jack’s Office, & Rick's yard (where the Charcoal is mellowed).
We were shown the Copper Stills where the mash is cooked and fermented. (This is the distilling process.)
We were shown the Cave Spring Water where Jack Daniels gets its iron-free spring water. The water flows year-round at 800 gallons per minute with a constant temperature of 59 degrees.
We were shown the Sour Mash Whiskey in a large Fermenter, each was numbered according to the type of whiskey.
We were shown the Charcoal Mellowing process where the whiskey slowly seeped through 10 feet of special charcoal until it was good and mellow.
We were shown the barrel room where the whiskey is aged.
We went back to the visitor center but could not taste the whiskey because Lynchburg is a dry county.
Jack Daniel Distillery is located at 182 Lynchburg Hwy Lynchburg, TN. 37352. Telephone number 931-759-6357.
We ate lunch in Lynchburg and went back to the Jameson Inn in Tullahoma.
We went out to supper when my daughter-in-law finished work that night.

We had a great weekend, we ate out several times, stayed in a nice hotel, and visited the Jack Daniels Distillery.

1982 Summer ~Family trip to Memphis, Tennessee

My husband drove our 1980 Camel Brown Chevrolet Malibu to Memphis Tennessee where we visited the Memphis Zoo, Graceland, and the Memphis Airport.

Description of what our children were wearing that day.
My oldest son was wearing a white pullover shirt, Levi jeans, and a Brave’s cap. My daughter was wearing brown jeans, a white tee shirt, and brown sandals. My middle son was wearing Levi's jeans, a yellow tee shirt, and blue tennis shoes. My youngest son was wearing a Dallas Cowboy jersey, Levi jeans, and white tennis shoes.

We visited the 76-acre Memphis Zoo, which has more than 3,500 animals and over 500 different species.
In the Northwest Passage, we saw polar bears and sea lions.
In the Central Zone, we saw giant pandas, otters, blue magpies, hogs, and deer, cranes.
In the Primate Canyon, we saw the gorillas, orangutans, and siamang gibbons.
In the Cat country, we saw lions, cheetahs, leopards, meerkats, lynx, cougars, and tigers.
In the West Zone, we saw Komodo dragons, toucans, fresh and saltwater fish.
In the farm area, we saw ducks, a donkey, a mini pig, a Jersey cow, goats, a prairie dog, a rabbit, and a Caspian horse.

In the herpetarium, we saw alligators, lizards, and frogs.
Memphis Zoo
We visited Graceland's home in the late Elvis Presley.
Graceland is a large white-columned mansion that opened to the public in 1982.
In 1982, you could walk around the grounds and they did not charge you a fee.
We walked through the front music gates that were open to the public. The gates were designed for Elvis by Abe Saucer and custom-built by John Dillars, Jr.

We walked around the Meditation Garden, which was constructed in 1964-1965 and was built for Elvis as a place for contemplation.

The garden’s centerpiece is a circular twelve-foot fountain pool with five single jets of water and a larger one in the middle all lit by colored floodlights.

Our next stop was the Memphis Airport located at 2491 Winchester Road suite 113 Memphis, Tennessee 38116.
We walked through the airport terminal to watch the different jets take off and land.
We saw jets from Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines, and American Airlines. We even got to walk inside and tour one of the planes.

On our trip home my head started to ache. I said to my husband that it sure would be nice to get a hotel room for the night but his idea was to drive home and sleep in his own bed.

I climbed into the backseat to lie down to relax my head and the boys moved up front.
The next thing I knew I heard sirens and a State Trooper pulled us over.
He said my husband was speeding, and he gave him a ticket.

How ironic he did not save a penny by speeding to get home. We could have spent the night in a very nice hotel for the cost of the speeding ticket.
It would have been a great trip and to stay the night in a hotel room would have been relaxing.

We had fun at the Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Airport, and Graceland.
Getting a headache and my husband getting a speeding ticket was not the way I would have liked this adventure to end.
Some adventures are fun, some not fun, but what is life without some sort of adventure.

What will my next adventure be?
